Sergio Muñoz

Bachelor of Laws from Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. He has published books and articles on matters of legal interest.

He joined the Chilean Judiciary in 1982, where he served until October 2024. Over his judicial career he served as court clerk and first instance judge, as Justice of the Santiago Court of Appeals for 7 years and of the Supreme Court for 19 years.

He held a range of roles within the Judiciary, including Board Member of Editorial Jurídica de Chile, Head of the Support Unit for the Criminal Procedure Reform and for the non-reformed Civil Jurisdiction; Board Member and President of the Administrative Corporation of the Judiciary; Coordinator of the First CELAC - European Union Judicial Summit in 2013; Coordinator of the XVII Ibero-American Judicial Summit Chile 2014; and National Coordinator for Human Rights Violation Cases across several periods.

He also drove innovation across different areas of judicial work: he drafted the bill on which the Law on Electronic Processing of Judicial Proceedings was debated and passed, one of the most significant transformations in the administration of justice in Chile and Ibero-America.

He has served as a university professor at undergraduate and postgraduate level, and has spoken at numerous national and international conferences, seminars and congresses.

He served as President of the Chilean Electoral Qualifying Tribunal, the country's highest electoral authority, from 2008 to 2012, and between 6 January 2014 and 6 January 2016 he served as President of the Supreme Court of Justice of Chile. He presided over the Third Chamber of the Supreme Court across two periods, from 2012 to 2024.

He currently practices law independently and advises law firms and companies.
